How Can I Reduce My Allergies When I'm Outdoors?

If you’re someone who suffers from seasonal allergies, you’re probably afraid to face the outdoors in the spring when pollen is in full force. Fortunately there are things you can do to help prevent your allergies from flaring up.

First, knowing what environments trigger your allergies will help you properly treat them. Also, be aware of when pollen is most dense in the air. This tends to be between 5 and 10 a.m. It’s a good idea to coordinate outdoor activity around when pollen counts are lowest, which is typically later in the day. It’s easy to find pollen and mold reports for your area; just visit the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology online for a localized report at www.aaai.org.

Second, you can protect yourself when you go outdoors. For example, you can use a surgical mask or a scarf around your face to keep the allergens out. That way you can still enjoy the outdoors without developing any allergic reactions later. Sunglasses can help protect your eyes from floating pollen. Probably the easiest thing to do is wash your hands, clothes, and hair after you’ve been outside. Pollen can linger, causing an allergic reaction.

Take these tips so you can continue to enjoy the outdoors, even when pollen is at its peak. If you have any questions, talk to your USA Drug Pharmacist. We’re happy to help.
